Sunderland is a rural town located in southeast Franklin County, Massachusetts. The town was settled in 1713 and was incorporated in 1714. It was named after Charles Spenser, the Earl of Sunderland. It is home to many active farms, including dairy, produce and tobacco. It is also home to many maple sugaring businesses and the Mount Toby State Forest. Sunderland’s town center includes many historic homes, a town hall, and the Graves Memorial Library. Also located on Main Street is the 350 year-old Buttonball Tree, a tourist attraction.
